The Bison, historically, was vital to the survival of the western plains Indian tribes of North America. They relied on these noble animals for pretty much all of the necessities of life: the hide or skin for clothing and making almost anything from the walls of their dwellings, to bags or pouches for whatever was needed to be carried or held together; and the bison meat was a staple of their diet.
These massive animals weigh up to 2000 pounds, can hit speeds of 40 miles per hour, and feed on grasses and sledges year-around. So when blizzards blanket the plains with deep snow, bison use their massive heads as a plow of sorts to push aside the drifts, and reach the forage below. The snow also provides a source for water as these emence animals are said to drink about 10 gallons a day. They also can use their big hooves to break through the ice on ponds and streams so they can drink the water below.
