Description
This is the Mission of Fr. Junipero Serra. It was built in 1769 in what is known today as Mission Valley, in San Diego, CA. This was the first of nine missions built by Fr. Serra in what was then a Spanish Colony. The missions were built not only to serve as a place of worship, but also to convert the indians, and develop self-sufficient landed enterprises for the new Spanish Colonies. Fr. Serra also brought to California the European products that eventually became central to the state's agriculture empire: oranges, lemons, olives, figs, grapes, and vegetables, as well as cattle, sheep, goats, and horses. Fr. Junipero Serra, a priest of the Franciscan order of the Catholic Church, was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 25, 1988.
